It was a terrifying display of the growing violence on the streets of Syria, and for Shadi, the limit of what he could endure. Fearful for his family’s lives, he took them and fled. Their story could have easily ended in tragedy, but after surviving two years as refugees, the Al Dakhil family is now safe and thriving in Canada thanks to the sponsorship of Holy Redeemer Catholic Parish in Ottawa and the Knights of Columbus. Following a mustard gas attack, Monsignor returned to the Diocese of Brooklyn and received permission to begin a ministry to African American Catholics. Canadian Priest and Knight Battles Wildfires

Father Gerald Mendoza is a priest of the Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan in Northern Alberta and a Knights of Columbus. The wildfires raging across Canada have heavily affected the communities he serves in an isolated part of the country. In response to the disaster and destruction, Father Mendoza volunteered to battle the blaze to help keep his community safe. Jim Wahlberg’s youth was filled with brokenness. In his formative years, he learned how to steal cars, break and enter, became homeless by age 12, and succumbed to addiction. After becoming a ward of the state and serving multiple prison terms, a chance meeting with Mother Teresa while incarcerated changed the trajectory of his life, beginning his path back to Christ.
